When a horrific crime involves teenagers, the media instinctively reaches for a narrative that makes society feel a little less guilty. They look for ways to soften the edges, turning a catastrophic failure of humanity into an after-school special about the dangers of peer pressure.

On November 14, 1997, fourteen-year-old Reena Virk was brutally murdered under the Craigflower Bridge in Saanich, British Columbia. It was a horrifying crime perpetrated by a group of her own peers, and it immediately sparked international headlines. But the media frenzy that followed didn’t actually tell the truth about what happened to Reena. Instead, it created a massive moral panic about “girl-on-girl violence” and “mean girls.” The press actively distorted the facts, erased critical elements of race, and severely downplayed the sheer, unadulterated brutality of the crime.

If we want to actually understand what happened to Reena Virk, we have to strip away the media-generated myths and look directly at the forensic evidence, the judicial proceedings, and the sociological reality of who she was and who killed her.

The most pervasive lie told about this case is that it was simply schoolyard bullying that got out of hand. The media heavily framed Reena’s murder as a petty teenage spat, labeling the attackers as mean girls. But the clinical and forensic realities reveal a level of violence that makes the word “bullying” feel like a sick joke.

Reena was not just bullied; she was swarmed and beaten by a group of youths known as the Shoreline Six, alongside a sixteen-year-old male named Warren Glowatski. After surviving that initial, brutal attack, a severely injured Reena staggered away, trying to cross the bridge to safety. She was then hunted down by Glowatski and fifteen-year-old Kelly Ellard.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Laurel Gray testified at trial that the blunt force trauma Reena sustained was comparable to a pedestrian being struck in a high-speed car crash. She suffered eighteen distinct blows to the head. She had a sneaker imprint permanently stamped onto her forehead. Her internal tissues were literally crushed against her backbone. And finally, the autopsy revealed the presence of pebbles and silt lodged deep in her throat. That forensic detail proved an agonizing truth: Reena was still alive and drawing breaths when Ellard and Glowatski dragged her into the shallow tidal pool of the Gorge Waterway and forcibly drowned her. Framing this prolonged, deliberate homicide as petty bullying severely minimized the catastrophic violence these teenagers chose to inflict.

Then there is the issue of the motive. To explain why Reena was targeted, mainstream news outlets relentlessly pointed to her physical appearance. They repeatedly emphasized her weight, noting she was around 200 pounds, and pathologized her body as the primary reason she was treated as an outcast.

By focusing entirely on her weight, the media systematically erased the reality of race and systemic marginalization. Reena was a South Asian girl. Her parents, Suman and Manjit Virk, were immigrants from India who had converted to the Jehovah’s Witness faith. This deeply complex intersectional identity made Reena a minority within a minority, isolating her in both her predominantly Sikh community and the broader white society of Victoria.

At the time, the media and local police largely denied that racism played any role in the murder, using the excuse that some of the initial attackers were also non-white. But the facts of the assault tell a different story. The initial attack began with a highly symbolic, racially charged act: Nicole Cook, the leader of the group, took a lit cigarette and stubbed it out directly on the center of Reena’s forehead—the exact spot where a bindi is traditionally worn in South Asian cultures. Furthermore, Syreeta Hartley, who was Glowatski’s girlfriend at the time, actually testified in court that Glowatski explicitly admitted to her that his involvement was partly motivated by racism. The press just didn’t want to hear it.

The media also went out of its way to coddle the killers, presenting them as innocent, middle-class young ladies who had just made a single, inexplicable mistake. During the investigation, Kelly Ellard actively tried to use her gender and perceived social status as a legal shield. In a recorded police interview, she famously scoffed, telling investigators that she was a girl, that she never thought girls got arrested for murder, and that it just wasn’t very ladylike.

In reality, Reena’s attackers were deeply embedded in a violent youth subculture that actively idolized crime. They fetishized gangsta rap and mafia bosses like John Gotti, even calling themselves the Crip Mafia Gang. They used a manufactured facade of urban violence to establish their social hierarchy. The youth witnesses who stood by and watched the beating didn’t act like terrified, innocent kids; they exhibited profound emotional detachment. Some stated the murder was simply not very interesting, prioritizing a strict code of silence to protect themselves and their friends from the authorities.

But perhaps the greatest disservice the media did to Reena was trying to force her into the mold of the “perfect victim.” In order to build public sympathy, early accounts often tried to sanitize her struggles. But the truth is, Reena was a complex, flawed, and deeply rebellious fourteen-year-old. She was desperately seeking a place to belong. She fought bitterly against her family’s strict religious rules. Tragically, she had even falsely accused her own father of molestation in a desperate attempt to get placed into the foster care system, entirely because her peers had convinced her it would give her more freedom and social acceptance.

We have to be able to hold Reena’s teenage rage, her reckless choices, and her profound loneliness with care. As Quinn Shephard, the creator of the 2024 Hulu miniseries Under the Bridge, correctly noted, it is vital that we understand Reena as a complex, messy human being without demanding she fit the myth of the perfect victim in order to care that she was murdered.

The justice system’s handling of the case ultimately highlighted the divergent paths of the two primary killers. Warren Glowatski was convicted of second-degree murder in 1999. Over the years, he actually took full responsibility for his actions. He embraced his Métis heritage, engaged heavily in restorative justice, and expressed profound remorse. He even personally apologized to Reena’s parents. In an unbelievable act of grace, Suman and Manjit Virk offered him their forgiveness and actually supported his day parole in 2007. Glowatski was granted full parole in 2010.

Kelly Ellard’s trajectory was the exact opposite. She maintained total denial, dragging the Virk family through a multi-year legal nightmare that encompassed three separate trials and multiple appeals. She was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder, a conviction upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2009. Ellard eventually changed her name legally to Kerry Marie Sim and was granted day parole in 2017. However, she never shed what the parole board called an anti-social and delinquent value system. In July 2025, her day parole was officially revoked after she tested positive for methamphetamine, exhibited threatening behavior toward prison staff, and was caught taking non-prescribed medication from other inmates.

Through all of this unimaginable grief, Manjit and Suman Virk dedicated the rest of their lives to community advocacy, fighting bullying, and promoting restorative justice across British Columbia. They were awarded the Anthony J. Hulme Award of Distinction in 2009, which is the province’s highest honor in community safety and crime prevention. Manjit wrote a book in 2008 called Reena: A Father’s Story to humanize his daughter and piece together the reality of her life. Suman passed away in June 2018 following a tragic choking incident, but the couple’s lifelong commitment to justice ensured their daughter’s death was not in vain.

The murder of Reena Virk is a permanent scar on the Canadian legal and social consciousness. When we finally look past the media-generated moral panics that tried to blame girl power or Reena’s weight, we are forced to look at the much more uncomfortable truths. We have to look at intersectional marginalization, the absolute brutality of isolated youth subcultures, and the systemic failures that leave racialized children unprotected. Reena’s story demands that we remember her not as a sanitized, media-friendly myth of schoolyard bullying, but as a desperately lonely fourteen-year-old girl who deserved to be seen, accepted, and kept safe.

When a brutal crime makes the evening news, the public is usually handed a very clean, neatly packaged narrative. The district attorney puts out a press release, the media repeats it verbatim, and the story becomes undisputed fact in the court of public opinion.

But before we dive into the 1983 murder of Katherine Mordick, let’s be perfectly clear about our objective here. We aren’t contesting the guilt or innocence of a man. What we are doing is laying out the simple facts. Because when you actually sit down and read the autopsy reports, the original police files, and the trial transcripts, you start to see how easily the truth can be buried to secure a conviction and a sensational headline.

If you followed the news reports and the prosecution’s media briefings back when this case broke, you were told a definitive story. The narrative was that on the morning of January 22, 1983, Katherine’s estranged husband, William Gregory Mordick, drove to her Orange County home around 10:00 a.m. to pick up their two young daughters. According to the prosecution, William put the girls in his car, walked back into the house, slashed Katherine’s throat, left her on the dining room floor, and drove away.

The media supplied the motive without hesitation: William killed her to avoid paying child support and to ensure he didn’t lose custody of his daughters, especially with a bitter divorce court proceeding scheduled just six days later.

For 25 years, the case sat cold. When it was finally revived, the press announced that newly available DNA technology had definitively linked William to blood smears left at the crime scene. It sounded like an open-and-shut case of a killer finally caught by modern science.

But the legal and forensic realities of this case were far less definitive than what the public was sold. The entire timeline rested on the assumption that Katherine was murdered at 10:00 a.m. while William was at the house. The medical and eyewitness evidence, however, directly challenged that theory.

First, consider the autopsy and the science of gastric emptying. Katherine’s autopsy revealed that her stomach was essentially empty at the time of her death. Under normal physiological conditions, it takes a light meal two to four hours to clear the human stomach. The coroner’s estimate placed her time of death in a broad 36 to 48-hour window before the autopsy, which technically included the 10:00 a.m. hour.

However, investigators found physical evidence in the kitchen—unwashed cereal bowls and spoons sitting in the sink, indicating a meal had recently been eaten. If Katherine ate breakfast before 10:00 a.m. and her stomach was entirely empty when she died, forensic pathology dictates she most likely died well after 12:00 p.m. By that time, William was long gone from the property.

This medical timeline was firmly anchored by a police report taken shortly after the murder. William and Katherine’s four-year-old daughter told the police, and her aunt, that her father picked them up “right after breakfast.” If Katherine and the girls had just finished eating at 10:00 a.m., it is medically impossible for Katherine to have been murdered by William at that exact time with an empty stomach.

Then there is the eyewitness. A neighbor named Bonnie Pioch testified before a grand jury, and during William’s first trial, that she had a conversation with Katherine on Saturday afternoon. If a neighbor saw Katherine alive and well in the afternoon, William could not be the 10:00 a.m. killer.

Even the DNA evidence was more complicated than the media’s smoking-gun portrayal. The defense rightly pointed out that because William had previously lived in that house, his DNA could have been deposited passively at any time. Furthermore, investigators found unknown animal hair and unknown male DNA at the crime scene. These were massive investigative leads that were nearly impossible for the defense to effectively track down after a 25-year delay. The prosecution did counter this by pointing out that the DNA found on a closet door was a mixed profile, intertwining William’s blood with Katherine’s DNA, which is much harder to explain away as a passive deposit.

So how did William Mordick end up convicted of first-degree murder in 2010 and sentenced to 25 years to life?

Because the jury that convicted him never heard the whole story. The trial judge completely excluded the daughter’s original police report about breakfast and the neighbor’s afternoon eyewitness testimony, categorizing both crucial pieces of evidence as unreliable hearsay. The jury only heard the prosecution’s clean timeline. They were kept in the dark about the conflicting autopsy data and the neighbor’s sighting, and so the media simply reported the prosecution’s flawless narrative.

It took nearly another decade for the legal system to acknowledge the missing pieces. In 2019, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the trial judge’s decision to hide the neighbor’s testimony and the four-year-old’s police statement violated William Mordick’s constitutional right to due process and a fair trial. The federal court reversed the denial of his habeas corpus petition and ordered that he be granted a new trial or released, officially highlighting that those excluded facts were absolutely critical to the truth.

So why didn’t you hear about this? Why didn’t the media blast the fact that a man was sitting in prison after an unconstitutional trial? The massive disconnect between a legally flawed conviction and the total silence from the press comes down to how the media consumes the criminal justice system.

Look at the timeline. The original news reports from major outlets and local papers were all published between 2008 and 2011. Back then, this story was fresh blood. It was a sensational, highly marketable narrative about a decades-old cold case finally solved by the magic of modern DNA. The reporters didn’t have to dig for the truth; they just lifted their information straight from the press releases handed to them by the Orange County District Attorney.

The legal system didn’t formally acknowledge that William Mordick received a fundamentally flawed trial until June 2019, nine full years after his conviction. He spent almost a decade fighting through the appellate system. The California state courts actually rejected his arguments, forcing him to take his fight all the way to the federal level before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals finally ruled that the trial judge had stripped away his constitutional right to due process.

But by the time that federal court overturned his conviction in 2019, the story wasn’t a simple, dramatic whodunit anymore. It had morphed into a dense, complicated legal battle over hearsay rules, federal precedents, and the constitutional right to present a complete defense. The brutal reality of the news business is that a ten-year-old appellate ruling about excluded witness testimony simply does not generate the explosive, viral clicks that a bloody murder conviction or a sudden DNA match does.

To make matters even quieter, the 2019 federal ruling was issued as an unpublished memorandum. It was handled by the federal court as a routine appellate correction, not a major, televised spectacle. There were no cameras waiting to capture the truth.

They had simply moved on. They chose to ignore the 2019 reversal because, for them, the profitable, sensational part of the story had already ended back in 2010. Nineteen-year-old Serena Chelsea McKay—known as “Serenity” to the people who loved her—was an artist. She was a high school senior, just weeks away from walking across the stage to graduate from Sagkeeng Anicinabe High School. But in April 2017, her life was violently cut short. Her murder didn’t just rob a family of their daughter; it became a horrifying public spectacle that exposed the darkest sides of social media, the lies perpetrators tell to save themselves, and the ongoing, systemic crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada.

To understand what happened, you have to look at where it happened. Sagkeeng First Nation is a community of about 4,000 people sitting 100 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg. When Serena moved there, the community was already carrying a massive amount of trauma. A 2015 report showed Sagkeeng had the highest number of unsolved MMIWG cases in the country, including the devastating losses of Tina Fontaine and Fonessa Bruyere. Serena walked into a place already reeling from a history of violence and vanished women.

The nightmare started at a local house party on Saturday, April 22. There was heavy drinking, and witnesses said Serena got into an argument with some of the other teenagers over alcohol. Late that night, things escalated. Serena was kicked out of the house and then viciously attacked in the yard by two teenage girls, aged 16 and 17. Because of Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, their names are legally protected and hidden from the public.

The violence was captured in two separate videos recorded on the 17-year-old’s phone. In a 48-second clip, you can hear the 16-year-old say, “I don’t want to f**king see her alive,” while repeatedly punching and kicking Serena. A second, nine-second clip shows a heavy boot stomping on Serena’s face at least six times, loud enough that you can hear bones cracking. Serena was on the ground, largely defenseless, crying and begging them to stop. You can hear her say, “I’m so sorry.”

After the beating, the two girls left Serena outside in near-freezing weather without her phone or any of her belongings, and simply went back inside to go to sleep. Serena was reported missing to the RCMP the next evening. Two hours later, community members found her body.

Almost immediately, the killers started spinning a narrative to protect themselves. The 16-year-old actually posted a smiling selfie on Snapchat, partially covered in blood, with the caption “just chilling.” In private messages, one of the suspects told a friend that it was just a normal fight, that she broke Serena’s nose, but that Serena was up and walking when they left her. Once they realized her body had been found, panic set in, and the suspect begged the witness to lie and tell the police the fight wasn’t that bad.

But the autopsy destroyed that fabricated story. The forensic pathology report documented a staggering 67 separate injuries on Serena’s body. Nineteen of those were to her head, including a fractured skull and bleeding in her brain stem from her head being violently snapped back. She wasn’t up and walking. The pathologist testified that the primary cause of death was hypothermia. The sheer trauma of 67 debilitating injuries, combined with a blood alcohol level of 0.22, made it neurologically and physically impossible for Serena to seek shelter. The prosecution proved that by beating her that severely and abandoning her in the cold, those teenagers killed her.

What made Serena’s murder gain international notoriety was how it was broadcasted. The videos were texted around and eventually uploaded to Facebook. The longer video stayed active on the platform for at least four hours before it was finally pulled down—and only because reporters flagged it. It sparked a massive global debate about how tech companies handle violent content. At the time, Facebook was relying on a reactive system of human flaggers, meaning the video kept getting re-uploaded and watched thousands of times. The public backlash was so intense that Mark Zuckerberg actually announced they were hiring 3,000 more content reviewers just to deal with graphic videos like this one.

For Serena’s family, the justice system offered almost no comfort. Because the killers were underage, the sentences felt vastly disproportionate to the absolute brutality of the crime.

The 17-year-old pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The judge didn’t hold back, stating that recording and sharing the attack showed a complete lack of remorse. She was handed the maximum youth sentence for second-degree murder: 40 months in custody and 23.5 months of community supervision. By 2020, she tried to get early release to attend university, but the court shut it down after looking at her institutional record, which included forging a staff signature, giving herself tattoos, refusing lockup orders, and writing documents that showed she was still trying to distance herself from accountability.

The 16-year-old—the one who was the main aggressor and explicitly threatened Serena’s life on camera—somehow pleaded down to manslaughter. The Crown tried aggressively to get her sentenced as an adult, but the judge cited her developmental history, PTSD, and severe substance abuse to keep her in the youth system. She received the maximum youth sentence for manslaughter: just two years in custody and one year of supervision.

When those sentences were read, Serena’s family erupted in the courtroom. They shouted that there was absolutely no justice for a life taken with such astonishing cruelty.

The National Inquiry into MMIWG pointed to Serena’s murder as a devastating example of lateral violence—where marginalized people, weighed down by the systemic trauma of colonization and residential schools, direct that trauma inward and attack one another.

After her death, the communities of Sagkeeng and Winnipeg held vigils, drumming circles, and marches, desperately demanding an end to the MMIWG crisis. When Serena’s high school class graduated a few weeks later, they left an empty chair with a red gown draped over it. They also established an arts bursary in her name. Serena’s life was stolen in a horrific act of violence, but her community made sure her memory, her art, and the undisputed facts of what happened to her would not be erased.

Look at the recent breakthroughs in two completely different cold cases: the 1996 death of Danielle Houchins in Montana, and the 2000 disappearance of Angel Fehr right here in our own backyard in British Columbia. Both cases show the often disturbing contrast between what authorities originally told the public and the reality that was eventually uncovered.

Let’s start with Danielle. In September 1996, the 15-year-old was found dead at a fishing access site on the Gallatin River in Belgrade, Montana. What followed was an institutional failure. Despite clear, physical evidence at the scene indicating she had been brutally assaulted and murdered, the sheriff, coroner, and medical examiner officially ruled her cause of death as “unknown.” Why?

To make matters infinitely worse, the Montana State Crime Lab actually misfiled critical evidence, including the watch she was wearing when she was found. It’s still missing today. For 28 years, her family was haunted by a death categorized as a tragic mystery rather than what it was: a homicide.

The truth didn’t come out until the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office reopened the case in 2019. Using modern genetic genealogy, investigators sent four hairs found on Danielle’s body to specialized labs.

By July 2024, they had a name: Paul Hutchinson. He wasn’t some known drifter; he was a 55-year-old fisheries biologist with a master’s degree, a family, and a 22-year career at the Bureau of Land Management. He had no criminal record and no known connection to Danielle. When investigators finally confronted him, he physically unraveled, sweating profusely and chewing on his own hand. The very next day, Hutchinson died by suicide—escaping a trial, but confirming to the world exactly what kind of violent predator had been hiding in plain sight.

Then there is the case of Angel Fehr. On Easter weekend in April 2000, the 27-year-old—who was five months pregnant—attended a family dinner in Abbotsford before leaving to drive home to Kamloops with her boyfriend, Trent Larsen.

For 19 long years, the media framed this as a baffling missing persons case. The story was that this expectant mother simply vanished without a trace, leaving her bank accounts untouched. Because Larsen provided plausible excuses to her family, a formal missing persons report wasn’t even filed for two months, a disgusting but common delay in domestic cases.

When the RCMP finally broke the case wide open in 2019, the media celebrated the news that Larsen was being charged with second-degree murder. The public expected a dramatic murder trial for the intentional killing of his pregnant girlfriend. But the legal and forensic reality was much uglier.

The truth was that Larsen had killed Fehr, stuffed her remains into a barrel, and buried it on a stranger’s rural property near 100 Mile House, using the isolated land as a permanent shield.

Investigators only found out after the RCMP’s Special Projects Unit took over and employed a “Mr. Big” undercover sting operation to trick Larsen into confessing to officers posing as a criminal syndicate.

And regarding that celebrated murder charge?

IT DIDN’T STICK.

After 19 years, the Crown knew it would be incredibly difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Larsen had the specific intent to kill. To guarantee a conviction and prison time, they accepted a pragmatic, if painful, plea deal. In 2021, Larsen pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter and committing an indignity to a dead body, receiving a sentence of just over eight years.

Even now, his rehabilitation is a point of contention. Over the last couple of years, the Parole Board of Canada has kept him on a very short leash during his day parole. They’ve explicitly shortened his extension periods because of his poor attitude, his lack of commitment to reintegration programs, and his frustrating tendency to blame media coverage for his inability to hold down a job.

Both of these cases prove how lousy incomplete early official conclusions can be.

An “unknown” death ruling masked a violent predator for nearly three decades, and a missing persons mystery evolved into headlines of a murder charge that ultimately had to be bargained down to a manslaughter plea. It took the relentless persistence of specialized investigators and massive leaps in forensic science to finally pierce through decades of illusion and expose the definitive truth.

In 1974, twenty-two-year-old Debbie Roe and her teenage sister Vicky were right on the edge of making it. They weren’t just singing at local Vancouver clubs for fun; they had just flown to Nashville to record an album backed by the exact same studio musicians who played for Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan.

They came home to Langley, British Columbia, as rising stars, even performing for the local elementary school. Their dad, a backhoe operator named Emil, couldn’t have been prouder.

But by February 1975, that dream was violently snuffed out, leaving behind a shattered family and a cold case that still haunts the Lower Mainland nearly fifty years after the fact.

When I look at the timeline of Debbie’s final night, the sheer vulnerability of her situation stands out. To support her music, Debbie worked as a cocktail waitress at the OK Corral in New Westminster.

Back in the ‘70s, working in the nightclub scene meant navigating long, pitch-black commutes through isolated, rural terrain. On Saturday, February 22, she clocked out around 2:00 a.m. and got into her blue Chevy Nova. We know she drove along the King George and Fraser Highways toward Langley, making a quick, routine stop at a Denny’s for gas and food. That Denny’s stop is chilling in hindsight. It was one of the few places open that late, making it the perfect, brightly lit spot for a calculating predator to watch her, see she was alone, and decide to follow her into the dark.

The next day, her Nova was found abandoned on a desolate stretch of the Fraser Highway known as Fry’s Corner. At first glance, you might think the car broke down and she tried to hitchhike. But her roommate was adamant that the Nova was in great shape. More importantly, the car was found locked. In 1975, a young woman driving alone at night doesn’t just abandon a perfectly good, locked vehicle in a sudden panic. That specific behavioral clue tells us she was either tricked by a ruse, approached by someone she recognized, or pulled over by someone presenting themselves as an authority figure.

The only physical trace left behind was a single, size-nine footprint in the dirt near the driver’s side door.

The investigation shifted from a missing person search to a homicide when a family out for a walk found Debbie’s body in a rural part of Langley, about seven kilometers from her car. The details from the autopsy are brutal. She had been severely beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled. But the actual cause of death showed a terrifying level of cold calculation: she was left face-down to drown in just six inches of water. The coroner called it an “enraged frustrated attack.” This wasn’t just a crime of opportunity; it was a passive execution by someone who felt a psychological hostility toward her.

Over the decades, the Langley RCMP vetted numerous suspects, but no one was ever charged. Her family always maintained that Debbie was far too cautious to get into a car with a total stranger. Because of that, a few prominent theories have lingered.

Was it an older male acquaintance who was infatuated with her, where a rejection triggered that “enraged” assault? Or was it something far more sinister? There is a deeply disturbing theory involving two police officers who had previously stopped Debbie on her way home just to ask her out. If a cop flashes his lights on a dark highway, you pull over, get out, and lock your doors—it perfectly explains the state of her abandoned car.

You also can’t ignore the terrifying pattern of violence happening in the area right at that time, often referred to as the “Nightclub Murders.” Just two months before Debbie was killed, a 22-year-old named Barbara LaRocque was found murdered near Langley. She worked at a club with the exact same ownership as the OK Corral. A month after Debbie’s death, Gail Rogers, a dancer at the Penthouse Nightclub, was found murdered off the Sea to Sky Highway. The RCMP was careful to explicitly state that these charges involve an adult female victim and stem from an incident on December 1, 2024, at the Gairloch Road property, exactly five months before Lilly and Jack vanished. Officially, authorities maintain these charges are unrelated to the missing children. Yet, the behavioral overlap is questionable, as Brooks-Murray’s unsealed claims of being blocked, held down, and having her phone taken align closely with the legal definition of forcible confinement. Martell was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Pictou provincial court on March 2. None of the charges have been proven in court.

The legal arguments lay out a terrifying picture of systemic abuse. Under the Tenth Amendment, the federal government is accused of unlawfully hijacking state sovereignty, essentially commandeering local police resources and forcing Minnesota cops to clean up the chaos caused by the feds. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara didn’t mince words, explicitly calling her killing “predictable and preventable.” Even former CBP Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske pointed out a disturbing pattern of federal officers immediately jumping to lethal force in situations that could have easily been de-escalated.

Then there is Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse. His death is incredibly hard to read about. Pretti stepped in to help a woman who had just been shoved to the ground by an agent. When agents tackled him, video proves he was holding nothing but a cell phone. While he was pinned face-down on the ground by multiple officers, one agent removed Pretti’s legally owned handgun from his hip. He was completely disarmed. Less than one second later, another agent opened fire, shooting Pretti at least ten times in the back and torso, continuing to pull the trigger even after he lay motionless.

The Washington Post consulted eight different policing experts on Pretti’s death, and their conclusion was unanimous: this shooting was probably avoidable through basic policing techniques. The experts criticized the agents for engaging in “sloppy wrestling” instead of using standard compliance holds, striking Pretti near the head with a pepper spray canister, and—most critically—failing to communicate to one another that his weapon had already been secured. Former Boston police commander Tom Nolan looked at the facts of firing into a disarmed, motionless man pinned to the ground and simply called it “a stone-cold murder.”
