The Murder of Madeline Pantoja
Dismantle the Media
The disappearance of 20-year-old Madeline Pantoja on May 10, 2023, and the subsequent conviction of Mario Juan Chacon Jr. in February 2026, serves as a clear example of the gap that can exist between public perception and the reality of a criminal investigation. While the community in Midland, Texas, was focused on a narrative of law enforcement inaction, the actual resolution was found in the quiet work of digital geofencing and behavioral forensics.
The sequence of events began on the night of May 9, 2023, when a friend dropped Madeline off at her home at the Palladium Museum Place Apartments. By the following evening, things had changed. At 8:30 PM on May 10, Chacon called Madeline’s brother to say they had been arguing; five minutes later, Madeline spoke with her brother and confirmed she was upset. Her last known communication was a text sent at 9:31 PM to finalize plans for a pool day. Forensic evidence later showed that between that night and the early morning of May 11, Chacon murdered Madeline in her apartment. Surveillance footage captured his Ford F-250 moving toward a remote area of South County Road 1160 at 3:22 AM on May 11.
